This way, even if someone does break in and take a stroll through your files they won’t find anything. And, of course, having a backup of your backup is always a good idea. Just Say No to BYOD If you are telecommuting as someone else’s employee, ask that your employer provides the machine on which you will be doing your work. Supplying your own computer opens up your personal information to whatever prying eyes might be trying to take advantage of your employeror that one coworker who isn’t exactly subtle about wanting your job. If your employer is hesitant, remind them that there are many advantages to their providing you with the computers and devices you’ll need for work. For instance, they can install monitoring software that will track whatever you do while using that device (allowing them to keep tabs on your productivity). They can also decide which malware protection and software will be downloaded. They won’t have that level of control if you’re using your personal device! Protecting Personal Devices If you lose that battle with your employer or if you are building your own business, you will need to take some extra steps to protect your company as well as your personal information. Basic malware protection isn’t going to be enough. Here are some extra steps you can take: Email Encryption: encrypting your email doesn’t have to be complicated or require extensive knowledge of coding like it used to. Today there are a  bunch of different plugins  that you can download and install that will do all of that work for you. Obviously, if you want to learn the code yourself, that’s great! But if your brain doesn’t speak code, a plugin will work just fine. File Encryption: In addition to encrypting your communications, you should also use drive and file encryption to thwart any jerks who are able to skirt your malware protection protocols. File encryption is usually built into most computing these days but if you want to add some extra protection, using independent encryption is better. These codes are updated far more frequently than built in encryption is updated by manufacturers. Password Protection: You likely already know the basic rules of creating a really good password. And you also likely already know that you need to create multiple passwords and you need to change them often. Doing this can eat up a lot of your time and still leaves you slightly vulnerable. A better option is to use a password protection program that uses two-factor authorization for use. This way you don’t have to remember or manually enter your passwords and the two-factor authorization will prevent data breaches from compromising your information. Two Factor Authorization: Speaking of  two-factor authorization, turn on this feature on every account that offers it. Two-factor authorization, or TFA, is where an account requires a second form of authorization from you before it will allow you or anyone else access to an account. This second form of authorization might be a code that gets sent to your cell phone via text. Sometimes it will be a regenerating code that you access via a key like Google Authenticator. Some companies will even send you physical “keys” that you plug into your USB ports. Not only does TFA keep your accounts secure, it will let you know immediately if someone is trying to access those accounts without your permission. Remember, working from home has a lot of perks but that doesn’t mean that you can be complacent when it comes to your privacy and proprietary data. He is credited with changing many of the ways in which the country operated at the time.He founded and built St. Petersburg, the city that became the capital until 1917, and relocated the government there from Moscow. He is credited with turning the Russian army into a modern machine, taking inspiration from western Europe.This modernising zeal is said to have been inspired by his Grand Embassy through Europe, in which he traveled across the continent in disguise. He was very impressed by the industry, politics, and military of western Europe and believe d Russia to be very backward.As a result, he enforced modern dress in Russia (including a tax on beards) and, in 1700, changed the Russian calendar to the Julian Calendar.Peter the Great founded the Russian Empire in 1721.Catherine the Great (1762-1796)Another ‘great’ Russian, Catherine was an admirer of Peter and continued his process of modernising Russia. Under Catherine, there was something of a golden age in Russia, with what has become known as the Russian Enlightenment, a flourishing of art and culture.Catherine very enthusiastically supported the conquest of Alaska, and during her reign ‘Russian America’ developed. At the same time, she freed aristocrats from military service and extended control over Poland.In 1767, she established a Grand Commission in Moscow, which functioned something like a parliament and was made up of 652 members of different classes â€" from officials to burghers â€" and of various provinces. Its role was to establish the wishes of the people and frame a new constitution.Alexander II (1855-1881)By the reign of Alexander II, the Russian empire had left its golden age and was passing through the period of social discontent and unrest that led to the revolutionary movements that ultimately brought about communism.However, Alexander himself was an enthusiastic reformer. In 1861, he famously liberated the peasantry from bondage, abolished corporal punishment, and promoted university education.This Emperor was killed by assassination, after previous attempts, by revolutionary socialists.Imperial Russia’s Political SystemAbsolute MonarchyThe political system of the Russian Empire was ‘absolute monarchy’ â€" a system in which there were no institutional limitations on royal power. The system was highly autocratic, as evidenced by Peter’s forcible removal of people’s beards.However, the issue for the monarchy was that there was never really any effective means to wield power over its people across the great length of t he empire. Local officials were often unreliable and isolated communities and peoples rarely felt the force of the law.Government ReformAs we have seen, however, the monarchs tried to implement many reforms to liberalise the country, often under the inspiration of western European enlightenment thinkers such as Rousseau and Voltaire.After the 1905 Revolution â€" which was itself the result of the social agitation in which the assassinations played a part â€" the Duma was established, an elected body that had the power to make laws. This was the first time such a thing had existed, whilst the same revolution established a party system and granted citizens rights including the rights to assembly, free speech, and conscience.Whilst the monarch still had significant power â€" including the power of veto â€" the achievements of the Revolution brought about the conditions that would eventually lead to his demise.Religion and EthnicityConsidering the size of the Russian Empire, the people over which it ruled were hugely multi-ethnic and gave loyalty to many different religions. However, the official religion was Russian orthodox: the emperor had to be orthodox, whilst the Holy Governing Synod was a representative function of the church in government.But this body was the result of Peter the Great’s distrust of the church, which he kept under a tight leash by appointing all bishops. Catherine, too, did not think very highly of the church, rather using much of the money earned by their lands to fund her wars.Under Catherine’s reign, Jews were considered foreigners and did not have the same freedoms as Orthodox Russian citizens. She also tried to maintain control of the Muslim population, who, in Russia, were traditionally nomadic. In her reign, towns were built specifically for Muslims to keep them from moving around the empire.The Decline of the Russian EmpireWith the increasing political unrest within the Empire, the rule of law and the monarch’s position was s everely tested â€" by strikes, assassinations, demonstrations, terrorism, and ultimately, the 1905 revolution.The Duma created the conditions for political differences to flourish and it symbolised the growing role of the people and opposition towards the monarch. It would seem that the Emperor, Nicholas II, knew that he did not have the control that he once did, and his repression was heavy handed, with huge increases in death penalties.Revolution and WarRussia entered World War I in defence of the Serbs, with whom they had an alliance. They ultimately fought with the British and French against the Germans, Austrians, and Ottoman Empire. Throughout much of the imperial period, Russia had fraught relations with the Ottomans, whose own empire was on Russia’s doorstep. However, the First World War didn’t go well for either of these powers, as they both collapsed â€" literally ceasing to exist.In 1917, Russia experienced a rerun of the 1905 revolution â€" however, this time, led by the Bolsheviks, it was successful in overthrowing the monarchy. How Much Time Should I Spend Practicing Guitar Suzy S. When youre beginning to learn guitar, you also have to learn how to practice. Follow this expert advice from guitar teacher Mike B. to find the proper amount of practice time you need to achieve your guitar goals   As a guitar instructor, one of the most common questions I get asked is how often should I practice? Students are told various amounts of time that are deemed proper to practice each day. Some say a half hour, some say an hour, some say more, some say less. With all of these conflicting guitar practice tips how can you make the proper decision regarding the amount of time you spend with your instrument each day? As an instructor, and as a person who practices every day, I feel it all comes down to the individual. Since every person has different interests, different levels of ability, and different goals, it would make sense for everyone to have a different practice schedule. In my opinion, the amount of time one spends practicing should be dictated primarily by your current goals. Your current goals can be defined as the material you need to get through before the next lesson, or any material you want to master outside of your guitar lessons. When you are just starting out and have only been assigned a few chords or melodies to work through it may not make sense to spend an hour a day practicing. It may make more sense to spend fifteen or twenty minutes a day practicing since there isnt much material available to work through. On the other side of the coin, a much more advanced student that has a lot of material to get through should spend more time practicing. The more material you have available to play should equal more time practicing. In an ideal world you should spend however much time is necessary to get through your material each day. In the real world that simply is not always possible, for a few reasons. First, people have schedules, commitments, social lives, and other responsibilities to occupy their day, so they simply can not spend the majority of each day practicing. Second, if you practiced the same exact material every day you would most likely get pretty sick of it. What is important in this situation is to set aside an amount of time that you can commit to each day, and prioritize what needs to be worked on each day. Time When it comes to time spent on the instrument, consistency is key. If you can devote an hour a day Monday through Friday to practice thats great. If you can only devote a half hour a day that works too. Whatever you can come up with will work, as long as you are consistent. Practicing five hours one day and then not touching the guitar for a week will not do you anywhere near as much good as simply playing every day. Material Once you have decided how much time you can realistically devote to the instrument each day, I find it very helpful to list out the material you are seeking to master. For example, say an intermediate student is currently working on chords, scales, arpeggios, a few songs, technique, and reading music. This student has decided to devote forty-five minutes every day to practicing. Within a forty-five minute span of time every one of these subjects could be touched upon. However, it might make more sense for the student to divide these subjects over the span of two days, rather than just one, and alternate his or her practice schedules. When doing this, prioritize what needs the most work, what needs to least amount of work, and assign each subject an amount of time. Some material may need to be touched upon on both days. Some material may be touched upon on both days but in different forms(Major and minor chords for example). For example: Day One     Minor Chords 15 minutes Song 1 10 minutes Scales 5 minutes Technique 10 minutes Reading music 5 minutes Day Two Major Chords 5 minutes Reading music 10 minutes Song 2 5 minutes Song 3 10 minutes Arpeggios 15 minutes By breaking up the material over two days you can spend more time on each subject, and keep your practice schedule fresh and interesting. I dont feel there is a magic answer when it comes to the question how much time should I spend practicing? The right guitar practice tips depend on the student and their goals. Focused and consistent practice will yield the best results. Quality of time spent can be a lot more important that quantity of time spent.
